Portland, OR

Lise Hull is a celebrated author, castellologist, and historian specializing in British heritage and its historical landscape. In 1985, she was stationed in Pembrokeshire, Wales, as a commissioned officer in the US Navy. Since then she has extensively explored the UK and its heritage sites, both as a resident and as a returning visitor. She considers Wales to be her spiritual homeland. In 2001, Lise received a Master of Arts with distinction from University of Wales, Aberystwyth, obtaining her degree in Heritage Studies from the Department of History and Welsh History. In 2002, she received the first ever Faculty of Arts award for best dissertation. She also has a Master of Public Affairs degree, specializing in Historic Preservation, from Indiana University. In 1994 shortly after her retirement from the Navy, Lise began working as a freelance writer and researcher and established Castles Unlimited, in an effort to increase awareness of the status of medieval castles in Britain.

Her numerous published works include:

  • Great Castles of Britain and Ireland, published by New Holland Publishers, September 1, 2005.
  • Britain’s Medieval Castles, published by Greenwood Publishers, 2006.
  • Interpreting the Castle Ruins of England and Wales, published by McFarland, 2009.
  • Castles and Bishops Palaces of Pembrokeshire, published by Logaston Press in 2005.
  • Castles of Glamorgan, published by Logaston Press, 2007.
  • Countries of the World: Scotland, published by Times Media in 2000.

For almost ten years Lise wrote the “Wales Off the Beaten Track” column for Ninnau, the North American Welsh newspaper and was on the staff of Renaissance Magazine, writing their castles lore and digging up the past columns. Other publications her work has appeared in include: Military History Quarterly, Military History magazine, History Today, Everton’s Genealogical Helper and Family History magazines, Family Tree magazine, Mysteries Magazine, Celtic Heritage, AntiqueWeek, Pembrokeshire Life, Activity Wales, Faces, Scottish Journal, as well as a variety of other print and online publications. In recognition of Countries of the World: Scotland, Thomson/Gale publishers selected Lise for inclusion in their reference book, Something About The Author, which highlights talented children’s writers.
